I've been asked recently by several people what my personal strength and conditioning workout routine is, so that's what we're going to cover today. Although I post a lot of videos and it may seem like I workout every day, I don't. I often film several videos in one day and then post them over different days. Having recovery time is important as well as maintaining balance in your life. Working out is a part of your life, but you can't let it control your life. You are the one in charge. If you don't feel like it on a…

IS CARDIO BOXING USELESS?
Sometimes I get asked my opinion on Cardio Boxing so I figured I'd just write about it. Short answer is NO. I don't think it's useless. I'll admit that there was a time when I thought it was, but that was at a time when I was more immature and I failed to ask one of the most important questions in fitness? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS? I mean not everyone is willing to get punched and kicked for real? It hurts and isn't the most pleasant experience. Believe me, I've been punched and kicked countless times. That being said, it…

CARDIO DOESN'T HAVE TO BE BORING!
When most people think of cardio, the first image that comes to mind is someone walking on a treadmill day in, day out, every day. To be honest, if I had to do that I think I'd go insane. It may sound hard to believe, but in all these years (actually decades) of working out I've never done that. There are so many better options, why would I? First, what is cardio and what is the purpose of it? It's really quite simple. It's a workout for your heart and circulatory system. By raising your heart rate for a sustained period…

BATTLE ROPES 101
The battle ropes are a very versatile piece of equipment. They're great for strength, endurance, body connection and coordination, and even for training sport specific skills. On top of that it provides am amazing cardio workout and can really help melt those pounds off. In this video, I cover my favourite exercises on the ropes. One thing to keep in mind always is that you must use the body as one unit. In the Chinese internal arts, we like to say "One part moves, All parts move". With the ropes it's very difficult to not do this. For if you don't then…

STUCK AT HOME? TRY A TRAMPOLINE!
Jumping on the trampoline is one of my favourite types of exercises. It's fun, it's simple, and it has tremendous health benefits. One major benefit is it helps you feel youthful. Look at kids running, jumping, and playing. They're so light on their feet and moving easily. Unfortunately it doesn't take long before you start to stiffen up and most adults have completely lost that supple feeling. It doesn't have to be that way however. Trampoline jumping is one of the best ways to get that feeling back. Another benefit is that it promotes lymphatic fluid flow. Jumping up and…

SIL LIM TAO - THE MOST IMPORTANT FORM FOR SELF DEFENSE
Forms practice is a very large part of the traditional martial arts. They serve many purposes. One is that in the old days it served as a glossary of the techniques of a martial art. The majority of the population was illiterate at that time and forms were a way to physically pass down the techniques and spirit of a martial art. Another is that it helps to ingrain the techniques into your subconscious improving muscle memory. And a third is that they are good exercise and in fact great for cardio as well as coordinating the body. However for our…

LET'S PUNCH THE HEAVY BAG!
The heavy bag is certainly one of the best pieces of equipment you can use. It's a fantastic cardio workout, develops explosiveness, power, timing, and so much more. And of course it's essential to develop your strikes for all martial arts. It is important however to use it properly. Learn to form a fist correctly and also use the proper energy. The golden rule (and this may sound a bit strange) is this: IF YOU TRY TO HIT HARD, IT WON'T BE. I'm sure that sounds very weird, but the reason why I'm saying that is if you think about trying to hit…

PUNCH BY NUMBERS!
I'm pretty sure most of you have done Paint By Numbers art projects before where a number corresponds to a specific colour. With punching in Boxing and Martial Arts, it's the exact same thing. Except that the number corresponds to a punch! This can really help in a number of ways. It helps familiarize yourself with the punches and also when hearing combos being called out spontaneously, it's much quicker to just say the number than the words. It makes things a lot easier when you're taking notes as well. Another benefit is that of having to think and respond quickly.…

The 12 Keys To Success In Fitness
After many years in the fitness industry, I've narrowed it down to 12 Keys To Success In Fitness. So if you're ready, here they are! 1. TIME AND EFFICIENCY This is the old quality over quantity rule. I'm sure you've all seen the lazy bench presser who does a set, waits 10 minutes, does another, waits 10 more minutes, etc. He then tells people that he works out for 3 hours a day when in fact he's probably doing about 30 minutes of work. He's just taking 3 hours to get it done. Scientifc studies have shown that the best result-producing workouts are…

TO COUNT OR NOT TO COUNT. THAT IS THE QUESTION!
Most people have probably heard the term HIIT before. In case you haven't, it stands for High Intensity Interval Training. A very solid method of training particularly for fat loss. In fact, some studies have actually shown that it can be up to 3 times more effective than steady state cardio. Not that anything is wrong with steady state cardio, but for maximum efficiency HIIT wins. Of course this concept is hardly new. A round of boxing is interval training as well. 3 minutes of work followed by 1 minute of rest. And of course, as an alternative to timing your…

HOTEL HIIT WORKOUT
I hope everyone enjoyed their long wekend. It was Family Day, Heritage Day, and Islander Day for the various Canadian provinces, and it was President's Day for the USA. Anyway we went out of town and stayed overnight at The Americana Waterpark which was a blast! As usual, I woke up early and decided to workout. However since I realized the fitness room wasn't open at that early hour, I chose to insead workout right in the hallway of my hotel room! It isn't necessary to have a ton of equipment or even ANY equipment to have a great workout. Check…
