YIN AND YANG IN FITNESS
Everyone knows the Yin and Yang symbol. People have it everywhere from t-shirts to cups to artwork on their wall. Yet when you ask most people to explain it in a way that anyone can understand it, they're often at a loss. Unfortunately there has been a lot of mystique built up around it just like all the misconceptions about Chi.
So to really sum it up, everything you do has BOTH yin and yang within it. Yin is the stillness and associated with cold while Yang is movement and associated with heat. There is of course more to it than just this, but it's best to start with this simple explanation.
Also compression and expansion represent Yin and Yang as well. If you look at your hands particularly in the martial arts and Qigong, when the palms are facing down it is Yin. When they're facing up, they're Yang. Yin falls while Yang rises. Viewing all physical movements in this way helps you understand the concept of Yin and Yang and also simplifies it making it easier to incorporate into your daily life. There is no need to shroud it in mystery. It's really quite simple as long as you practice proper awareness.
