This well known phrase was first coined in 1913 and based on an old Pembrokeshire proverb from 1866. They may not have known all these things at that time, but it turns out they were right! Let's take a look at the benefits of an apple a day.

APPLES ARE HIGHLY NUTRITIOUS
Here's a quick breakdown of the nutrition in an average sized apples

95 calories
24 grams of carbs

4.5 grams of fiber
9% daily value of Vitamin C
5% daily value of Copper
4% daily value of Potassium
3% daily value of Vitamin K

APPLES SUPPORT HEART HEALTH
One study with over 20,000 adults found that eating higher amounts of white fleshed fruits and vegetables was linked to a lower risk of stroke. The flavanoids found in apples have been proven to reduce inflammation and protect heart health. Apples also contain soluble fiber which can reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels (both are risk factors for heart disease)

CONTAINS CANCER FIGHTING COMPOUNDS
Apples contain several cancer fighting compounds including antioxidants and flavanoids. A review of 41 studies found that eating more apples was associated with a decreased risk of lung cancer, colorectal cancer, among other types.

MORE BENEFITS
-Supports weight loss due to their fiber content
-Improves bone health
-Promotes brain function
-Protects against asthma
-A study was done which found that eating one apple a day reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 28%

So in conclusion, apples are definitely beneficial to your health. Of course it is possible to get too much of a good thing. One or maybe two a day is fine, but don't try and ear five or six! That can lead to gas, bloating, and other digestive issues. Apples are tasty, nutritious, and loaded with health benefits. Go grab one and take a bite!
