OKAY! So what exactly are Willpower Reps? It's the name I've given to quality reps done with proper intent and focus. There is an expression that I love to use. "Do every rep like it's your first or last". I speak about this idea in detail in my book "Centreline : Live, Focus, Breathe" but it refers to the concept of making every rep count and not simply going through the motions. If you knew that an exercise would save your life, would you do half-hearted reps? NO, you would give it everything you've got, making sure your positioning is correct, making sure your breathing is correct, making sure you feel the exercise in all the muscles you're supposed to be feeling it in. You would try your absolute hardest to get every ounce of benefit you could from it. THAT is the type of focus you need if you wish to be successful in your fitness goals!
Essentially it's a form of meditation. In fact, I firmly believe that any activity you do with proper breathing, focus, intent, and proper body mechanics, is meditation. Whether it's raking leaves, cleaning the house, walking, working out, etc. it is meditation if all those thing are there. When you deeply concentrate on your exercise, you're listening and watching yourself from the outside in. You can watch your breathing, you can feel your muscles expand and contract, you can even feel certain organs of the body being gently massaged from the various expanding and contracting core movements, and more. ALl these things and more are possible if you perform each rep with proper focus like it's your first and last.
RELAXATION, AWARENESS, INTENT! These are the key principles to be able to actually do all this stuff. Instead of thinking of them as three separate concepts, think of them as one concept. After all, you need all three or you have none of them! You must be relaxed and not tense. So often people have difficulty feeling the muscles being exercised because they are simply too tense. You may hear occasionally someone telling you to tense your muscles or tense your core when you're doing something. There will be tension on your muscles when they're being exercised, but it doesn't have to be a conscious tensing. Simply try to hold your body in the correct position and you will have the necessary tension. So relaxation is first. Next comes awareness. Proper relaxation allow you to see and hear properly which leads to awareness. Awareness of the body, the mind, the spirit, proper breathing, making correct and wise decisions, etc. And finally you have intent. Be sure about what you want to do. Do it with proper focus like it's your first and last rep!
So to summarize, WILLPOWER REPS are necessary if you want to succeed in your fitness (or any other) goals! By practicing proper RELAXATION, AWARENESS, and INTENT, you'll get there!
