You all know your ABCs. But I bet you don’t know your RBCs of Qigong. R stands for Rooting, B stands for Breathing, and C stands for Connecting. So what does this all mean? Rooting is the feeling of being strongly rooted to the earth like a tree. That doesn’t mean you’re immobile. It sounds like a contradiction, but you can be mobile AND rooted at the same time. Breathing refers to deep or stomach breathing rather than shallow breathing with the chest only. Your stomach should expand like a balloon when you inhale and then flatten when you exhale. In more advanced Qigong, you can reverse this so that your stomach will suck in or create a vacuum when you inhale and then expand when you exhale. It’s important to have a qualified instructor for this type of thing though. If you don’t know what you’re doing, it could do more harm than good. And lastly, Connecting is the coordination or connection of the entire body as one unit. There is an expression “When one part moves, all parts move”. This means that you’ll never move just your arm or leg or any other bodypart by itself. The entire body assists in the movement. When you are able to effectively put all three things together without thinking about it, that’s when you’ll really start getting it. Of course it takes a long time and a lot of practice, but it is definitely worth it.
